Password managers are software apps which allow you to store all of your passwords in one place. Once you have a password manager, you only need to remember one password – the one you use to access it. We recommend Lastpass or Keepass.
Admit it. This is you isn’t it? Random passwords written on scraps of paper or in your mobile phone as contacts. Furthermore, we bet you have the same password for multiple services. Are we correct? If we are, don’t worry. We used to be just the same! That was until we lost that sacred piece of paper and the mobile phone broke. That’s when we realised the need for a password manager.
What is a password manager?
A password manager is a software app which creates and stores all of your passwords for you. These can include:
- online banking passwords
- website access passwords
- computer logins
- email passwords
- bank card information
- pretty much anything you can think of
The beauty of password managers is that they can create strong passwords (random combinations of letters, numbers and symbols) for you so you don’t have to remember them. No more “mypassword123”. They will also autocomplete password fields for you when you’re on a website which requires you to login.
The only password you need to to remember is the one you use to access the password manager.
Are they safe?
Yes. Online password managers encrypt all the data they store and any data you add or edit between you and the password manager site so even they don’t know what your passwords are.
Offline password managers that you store on your computer are also encrypted so no-one looking at your computer can see the contents.
There are plenty of password managers around along with plenty of sites which offer full reviews. In our experience the best ones to go for are Lastpass and Keepass.
Lastpass is an online password manager. This means you can access it from any browser on any computer. No need to worry about losing anything. It works on smart phones too so, if you have one, you’ll always have your passwords with you locked securely away.
Keepass is an offline password manager. This means you download it to your computer and you have complete control over it. This is useful if you’re worried about storing your passwords online (you need not be though). If you want to have online access, you can store your keepass database in a secure online file storage facility such as Dropbox, OneDrive or Google Drive.
Have a look at both sites to see which one you prefer. Either way, stop using pieces of paper and weak passwords – get a password manager today.
